Why Affordable Performing Arts Matters - and How Masquerades Keeps Costs Low for Bedfordshire Families

There is a quiet crisis happening in children's performing arts across the UK, and most people outside the industry don't realise it's there. Drama schools, dance academies and musical theatre groups have, over the past decade, become increasingly expensive - to the point where many talented, passionate young people simply can't get through the door.
We think that's wrong. And at Masquerades Youth Theatre Group, we've spent over 20 years doing something about it.
The cost of performing arts and why it matters
Ask any parent who has looked into performing arts tuition and they'll tell you the same thing: the price can be eye-watering. Depending on the school or academy, weekly classes can cost anywhere from £10 to £30 per session. Add in examination fees, costume purchases and compulsory branded uniform requirements, and a child attending multiple classes could easily cost a family several hundred pounds every term.
For many families in Bedfordshire and across the UK, that's simply not possible. And the consequence is that a generation of children who might have thrived on stage, who might have found their confidence, their community, and their calling in a drama or dance class, never get the chance.
The performing arts have long carried a reputation for being elitist. We believe it doesn't have to be that way.
What Masquerades does differently
When Karen founded Masquerades, starting with a small Saturday morning drama class in Northill, affordability wasn't a policy she wrote down. It was just common sense. The children in the village deserved access to something brilliant, and keeping costs low was how you made that happen.
More than 20 years later, that principle is still at the heart of everything we do.
Classes from as little as £3.50 per hour. Class fees vary slightly depending on the session, but we work hard to keep them as low as possible across the board - and for families with more than one child attending, our hourly bundle pricing brings fees back down an affordable mark. It's our way of making sure that having two or three children who love performing doesn't become a financial burden. These prices reflect a genuine commitment to keeping the performing arts within reach for all families across Northill, Cople, Great Barford, Moggerhanger, Willington, Caldecote, Potton, Eyeworth and the surrounding areas of Bedfordshire.
Half-termly billing, not monthly direct debits. We charge on a half-termly basis, which means you're not locked into a long-term financial commitment before you know whether a class is right for your child.
Costumes provided for a small hire charge. One of the biggest hidden costs of youth theatre is show costumes. At Masquerades, the vast majority of costumes are provided for students. We only ask for a small hire charge per student before the production, rather than requiring families to buy outfits that may be worn once. Basic, everyday items such as shorts, leggings, trousers, are sometimes needed, but these are things children can wear again long after the show comes to an end.
No compulsory extras. We do offer Masquerades branded merchandise and uniform items for students who want them - much like LAMDA exams, they're there for those who want them, but never a condition of joining or staying. We print our merchandise in-house too, which keeps those costs as low as possible for families who do want something to show their Masquerades pride.
How our costume and prop hire supports students
We actively hire out our costumes and props to other groups and productions. The income generated from that hiring goes directly back into supporting Masquerades students, helping us keep class fees low and giving us the resources to stage the kind of high-quality shows our students deserve.
It's a circular model that works. Families in the community get access to great costumes at fair prices; Masquerades students benefit from the proceeds. Everyone wins.
Performance-first, not exam-first
Another way Masquerades keeps the experience meaningful without inflating the cost is by focusing on live performance rather than exam work. While we do offer LAMDA exams for students who want qualifications, it's not our primary focus - and it's certainly not a requirement.
Instead, every student works towards two full productions a year: original, unique shows that put them in front of a real audience. These aren't end-of-term showcases in a studio. These are proper performances, and they're where real growth happens.
This approach also means families aren't on the hook for external examination fees unless they actively choose to pursue them. The core Masquerades experience, the classes, the rehearsals, the shows, stands completely on its own.
Why this matters beyond the cost
Children who take part in drama and dance build confidence, communication skills, teamwork and resilience. They learn to read a room, to work with others who are different from them, to take direction and give it, to fail at something in rehearsal and try again until they get it right. These are life skills, and they shouldn't be available only to children from higher-income families.
One parent put it beautifully: "Masquerades brings pure joy, confidence and encourages everyone to celebrate their strengths. Team work, kindness and taking care of each other is integral to the group. The happiness that this club brings is beyond anything I've ever come across."
That's what we're here for. Not examination certificates on a wall (though we're proud of those too). Not Instagram-perfect content. Real joy, real growth, real community - at a price that doesn't exclude anyone.
Who we are and where we are
Masquerades Youth Theatre Group is based in Bedfordshire and runs classes in Northill, Cople and surrounding villages. For children and young people aged 18 months to 18 years, we offer a broad range of classes including Drama, Musical Theatre, Jazz, Street, Ballet, Acro, Screen Acting, Tap and Jazz Tech. For adults, we run weekly Drama (as part of our MYT Staged brand), Tap Jazz and Club Pom classes, because a love of performing doesn't have an age limit, and neither do we.
